RALEIGH, N.C. - Maryland Senior outside hitter Beth Gillming (Cincinnati, Ohio) led all players with 16 kills and the Maryland Terrapins volleyball team picked up its first Atlantic Coast Conference road win of the season, sweeping the North Carolina State Wolfpack (30-27, 30-24, 30-15) in Raleigh, N.C. Friday evening at Reynolds Coliseum.

The Terps (15-9, 7-8) won a back-and-forth game No. 1 that saw both sides lead by as many as four points. The Wolfpack (3-22, 0-15) jumped out to an 11-7 lead, but the Terps rallied to tie the game at 13 with a 6-2 run. Maryland would stretch that lead to 28-24 late, before fighting off a late State run in the three-point win.

Gillming paced the Terps with six kills in the game and sophomore middle blocker Katie Usher (Vienna, Va.) added five. Together, they accounted for 11 of the team's 17 kills in the frame.

The second game featured big runs by both teams. Maryland scored eight consecutive points early in the game to build a 9-1 lead. The Terps extended the margin to 13-2 and looked to be rolling to an easy victory. However, State made things somewhat dicey with two big runs of its own. A 7-2 Wolfpack run cut Maryland's lead to six at 15-9. The Terps answered with a 4-0 run of their own to go back up by double digits at 19-9. Up 26-16, State scored six straight points to make it a four-point game. It was too little, too late, though. The Terps scored four of the game's last six points to hold on.

Gillming added another six kills in the game while junior libero Maggie Schmelzle (Cincinnati, Ohio) was a thorn in the Wolfpack's side, registering 13 digs in game two alone.

Like the second game, Maryland built a working margin early, scoring nine of the first 11 points. The game was never competitive from that point. The Terps went up 18-6 and coasted to the finish line.

Senior Jade Brown (Atlanta, Ga.) posted double-digit kills for the Terps with 11. Schmelzle finished with 18 digs, while Gillming recorded 12.

Sophomore setter Hayley Hanson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) handled most of the setting duties as junior Tedi Doucet (Austin, Texas) missed the road trip due to illness. Hanson finished with a match-high 33 assists.

Sophomore Christina Paul (North Bethesda, Md.) saw her most significant action of the season, playing in all three games and posting nine digs and three service aces.

The Terps' front-line defense was dominant, holding the Pack to a meager .020 hitting percentage. Usher led the Terps in blocks with five, all assisted.

Maryland will try to get back to .500 in the ACC Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. against the North Carolina Tar Heels in Chapel Hill, N.C. The match will be broadcast live on ACCSelect.
