LA JOLLA, Calif.- The University of Maryland women's water polo team dropped 6-5 to the Redlands Bulldogs in their final Triton Invitational game. The Terps led 4-3 at halftime, but missed scoring opportunities that would have earned them the win.
"We did not take advantage of the opportunities we created," said Maryland head coach Carl Salyer. "We had so many more opportunities to score than Redlands but we couldn't find the back of the net."
Salyer credits some of the missed opportunities to Maryland's youth, as the Terps roster includes only two seniors and two juniors. "These are some of the growing pains we are experiencing," said Salyer.
Freshman Shannon Simerly's youth seemed not to be a hindrance as she led Maryland scorers for the third time this weekend with two goals. Sophomores Christen Vagts, Bryndis Klein, and Laurel Laidlaw contributed the remaining three.
In goal, senior co-captain Marissa Corwin blocked four in the first half while allowing only three goals scored. Sophomore Ashleigh Jobson added one block in the second half.
The Terps fly home tonight to prepare for next weekend's Terrapin Invitational at the Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium. All in all, Salyer called the trip to the Triton Invitational a great experience.
"We played four great teams, and competed with all four. It showed the girls we can compete with some of the top teams in the country," he said.
