BRADENTON, Fla. - Kate Stepanek fired a final-round 74 on Tuesday to help the University of Maryland hang on for the team title Tuesday at the USF/Waterlefe Invitational women's golf tournament hosted by the University of South Florida.
Maryland fired a team total of 310 in Tuesday's final round and withstood charges from Coastal Carolina and USF to pick up its first team victory of the 2006-07 season. The Terrapins finished with a 926 total, one stroke better than Coastal Carolina and three shots ahead of the host Bulls, who carded a tournament-best 299 on Tuesday.
Kelly MacWhinnie was the low individual finisher for the Terrapins, placing seventh with a 230 total over the 54-hole event. She led three Maryland players in the top-10, as Kelly Calkin tied for eighth at 231 after a 76 on Tuesday, while Stepanek tied for 10th at 232.
Also for Maryland, Katie Trotter tied for 15th individually at 235, while Jessica Reno tied for 33rd at 242.
Araceli Felgueroso of Coastal Carolina won medalist honors with an even-par total of 216. Tiffany Prats of Miami was second at 225, with USF's Christina Jones in third at 226.
Maryland plays next on March 26 and 27 at the UNCW Lady Seahawk Challenge in Wallace, N.C.
