The University of Maryland women's water polo team evened to 2-2 on their California swing with a 12-3 loss to seventh-ranked UC Davis today at the Schaal Aquatics Center. The Aggies jumped out early against the Maryland defense, leading 8-1 at halftime.
"Defensively, we weren't ourselves today," said Maryland head coach Carl Salyer. "We had a tough time defending them properly, and they are a good enough team to take advantage of that."
Still, the Terps held the Aggies scoreless in the third quarter despite two UC Davis advantage opportunities. On the offensive end, freshman Shannon Simerly connected for Maryland in the third.
Sophomore Elizabeth Hopkins and senior Orsi Ferenczy also found the back of the net for the Terps in the first and fourth quarters, respectively.
In the cage, sophomore goalie Ashleigh Jobson contributed six saves to the Terps' defensive effort while allowing eight goals scored in three quarters of play. Senior Marissa Corwin allowed four in the remaining quarter.
The Aggies saw scoring from eleven different players, led by junior Mary Lowe with two goals.
Said Salyer, "UC Davis is seventh in the country. That's why we are out here, to compete with the best teams in the nation. We learned a lot, and it was a good experience."
Tomorrow the Terps will play a double-header against Sonoma State and CSU Monterey Bay in Seaside, Calif. Maryland's record fell to 10-13 with today's loss.
