PINEHURST, N.C. -
Jessica Reno fired a 77 on Monday to lead University of Maryland players after the first round of the Pinehurst Challenge being played at the Pinehurst No. 8 Course and hosted by the College of Charleston.
Reno shot a 38 on the front en route to her 5-over-par round that put her in a tie for 10th place. Teammate Katie Trotter shot a 78 to tie for 14th as the Terrapins put two players in the top 20 individually at the halfway point of the 36-hole event.
Maryland was tied for ninth place in the 17-team field after firing a 321 team score on Monday. East Carolina led the field at 308 with host College of Charleston in second at 310 and North Carolina State in third at 312.
Also for Maryland, Kelly Calkin closed with a 38 on the back nine to record an 80 and tie for 33rd place, Kate Stepanek opened with an 86 and Kelly MacWhinnie shot an 87 in the windy conditions.
Ashley Lambert of Richmond led the individual standings after the first round with a 1-over-par score of 73. She led by two shots over Lene Krog of East Carolina and Sara Wikstrom of Arkansas-Little Rock.
The second round begins Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.
