CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Junior Katie Trotter had four birdies en route to a 1-over-par 73 on Sunday to help the University of Maryland move up one spot in the team standings to a sixth-place finish at the 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Golf Championship hosted at the Carmel Country Club.
Trotter's final-round 73 moved her from a tie for 34th to a tie for 18th individually with a 233 total for three rounds. She was 3-under-par through 14 holes on Sunday and came home with Maryland's best round of the tournament.
The Terrapins' team score of 311 moved them from seventh to sixth in the final team standings with a 931 total over the 54-hole event. The 311 team score tied North Carolina for the second-best team score of the day. Maryland, ranked 55th in the Golfweek rankings coming into the tournament, rallied to best No. 36 NC State on the final day. Seven of the nine teams in the ACC Championship were ranked among the top 55 in the nation.
Kelly Calkin fired a 77 on Sunday to tie for eighth individually and lead Maryland finishers at 226. Jessica Reno tied for 27th at 228 after a final-round 79, while Kate Stepanek placed 29th at 239 and Kelly MacWhinnie finished at 243 and in 34th place.
Duke earned its 12th straight ACC women's team title, with its 302 score Sunday giving the Blue Devils an 873 total. They won the team title by 35 shots, with Wake Forest rallying for second at 908 and Florida State finishing third at 913.
Duke's Amanda Blumenherst shot a 74 to earn medalist honors with a 4-under-par total of 212. Caroline Westrup of Florida State, who led the individual standings after each of the first two rounds, finished three strokes back, with Duke's Jennie Lee at 217. All five Blue Devils finished in the top 13 players individually.
Maryland will now await a potential invitation to its second straight NCAA Tournament. Should the Terps receive a berth to a regional event, play would begin on May 10.
