STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. - Four University of Maryland student-athletes either reached or broke par Monday, giving the Terrapins the first-round lead in the John Kirk / Lady Panther Intercollegiate women's golf tournament being hosted by Georgia State University.

Kelly Calkin and Kate Stepanek each shot 2-under-par rounds of 70 on Monday, while Jessica Reno fired a 71 and Kelly MacWhinnie carded an even-par 72 to propel Maryland to a team total of 283. The Terrapins head into Tuesday's second and final round with an eight-shot lead over East Carolina and a 12-stroke edge over Louisville.

Calkin and Stepanek were tied for seventh place individually, with Reno tied for ninth and MacWhinnie in 12th. Katie Trotter shot a 79 Monday to tie for 54th. Calkin blistered the front nine with a 33 for the Terps, while MacWhinnie turned the front in 32, setting the tone for a strong round by Maryland, which was the only school with a team score under par on Monday.

Stacey Tate of Memphis and Manuela Tarazona each fired a 4-under-par 68 to take the individual lead after the first round. They led by one shot over Lene Krog and Emelie Lind of East Carolina, Cindy LaCrosse of Louisville and Mary Mattson of Campbell.

The 36-hole tournament is being held at the 6,009-yard Eagle's Landing Country Club.
