Senior Kelly MacWhinnie and junior Katie Trotter helped the University of Maryland post a team score of 29-over par 313, good for 19th place after Thursday's opening round of the NCAA Women's Golf Central Regional Championship which is being held on the University of Michigan Golf Course.
MacWhinnie fired a 5-over-par 76 and sits in a tie for 44th, while Trotter was one shot back of her teammate in a tie for 62nd.
Junior Kelly Calkin, an All-Atlantic Coast Conference performer, is tied for 78th after an 8-over 79.
Senior Katie Stepanek was the four Terps' golfer to enter the scoring column, posting an 81, which is tied for 88th.
The Terps, ranked No. 49 nationally by GolfStat entering the tournament, are within striking distance of the top 10 as just five strokes separate places 13 through 19. The top eight teams at the central regional advance to the NCAA Championships (May 22-25).
USC was the lone school under par in the opening round of the three-day, 36-hole event, firing a 1-under 283. The Trojans hold a six-stroke lead over Indiana and TCU in the 21-team field.
Jacqui Concolino of Vanderbilt is atop the individual standings after carding a 4-under 67. Taylor Leon of Georgia, Catherine Matrange of TCU and Belen Mozo of USC are all one shot off the pace.
Senior Jessica Reno carded a 13-over-par 84 for the Terps and did not figure into Thursday's scoring.
The Terps begin teeing off in round two at 8 a.m. Friday. The regional concludes Saturday.
