Stepanek Fires 71 in NCAA Second Round

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Kate Stepanek fired an even-par 71 Friday to post the best round thus far by the University of Maryland at the 2007 NCAA Central Regional Women's Golf Tournament hosted by the University of Michigan.
Stepanek moved up 35 spots in the individual standings with her round and ended Friday's second round in a tie for 53rd place in the individual standings. The Maryland senior had a 36-hole total of 152 to lead the Terrapins heading into Saturday's final round.
As a team, Maryland shot a 307 on Tuesday and was in a tie for 18th at 620. The top eight teams and two individuals not on qualifying teams advance to the NCAA Championship to be held in three weeks in Daytona Beach, Fla. Arkansas and Arizona were in a tie for eighth after Friday's round at 592, three shots better than Kent State.
Also for Maryland on Friday, Kelly MacWhinnie fired a 78 to tie for 65th with a 154 total, while Katie Trotter was at 155 following her second-round 78, sitting in a tie for 68th. Kelly Calkin was tied for 93rd at 162, while Jessica Reno improved to an 80 on Friday and was tied for 98th at 164.
Stepanek had three birdies on her round on Friday, including back-to-back birdies on the 14th and 15th holes. She turned the back in 1-under-par 34 to post the Terrapins' best round of the tournament thus far. Trotter eagled the par-4 sixth hole and was 1-under through the eighth hole Friday. She suffered a pair of double bogeys on the way in and posted a 78.
Southern California shot 288 on Friday and remained in the lead in the team standings with a two-day total of 571. The Trojans led by nine shots over TCU and by 13 strokes over Indiana.
Individually, Jacqui Concolino of Vanderbilt remained in the lead, using a 68 on Friday to post a 36-hole total of 135. She led by one shot over Paola Moreno of USC, whose 66 on Friday is the best individual round of the tournament thus far. Catherine Matranga of TCU was in third at 140.
Pamela Ontiveros of Oral Roberts and Noriko Nakazaki of Notre Dame were in a battle for the individual-qualifying spots for the nationals, with Ontiveros in ninth at 143 with Nakazaki two shots behind.
Maryland tees off in the final group at 1:20 p.m. on Saturday in the third round.
