INDIANAPOLIS - University of Maryland director of athletics Deborah A. Yow has been selected to serve on a group charged with studying academic performance in men's basketball, the NCAA announced on Tuesday.
In an announcement from NCAA President Myles Brand, the Division I Men's Basketball Academic Enhancement Group has been charged to work toward analyzing data, suggesting changes and working with the NCAA and the National Association of Basketball Coaches toward improving academic performance.
"It is essential that NCAA constituent groups work together to evaluate the causes and develop meaningful strategies to improve academic performance in men's basketball," said Brand. "Academic reform is here to stay and we need to work together to aggressively develop and implement solutions that ensure basketball student-athletes are as successful in the classroom as they are on the court."
Yow will be part of a 26-member group of head coaches, presidents and chancellors, commissioners, directors of athletics and faculty athletic representatives. Among the coaches selected for the panel are Jim Boeheim of Syracuse, Paul Hewitt of Georgia Tech, Bo Ryan of Wisconsin and Herb Sendek of Arizona State.
The group is expected to make recommendations to the Division I Board of Directors by the end of 2008, in addition to providing regular status updates during the course of the project.
