COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland linebacker Erin Henderson garnered one of the first accolades of the 2007 football season when he earned a spot on the prestigious Playboy Preseason All-America team.
This is the 51st year of the Playboy All-America team tradition, which has included players such as Dan Marino, John Elway, Troy Aikman, Barry Sanders and Peyton Manning.
Henderson, who will be a junior in the fall, is the first Terp to be named to the squad since his brother E.J. secured a spot in 2002, just prior to his senior season. E.J. Henderson went on to win the Chuck Bednarik Award, as the nation's top defensive player, and the Butkus Award, honoring the top linebacker in the country.
Erin Henderson is coming off a breakout season. After missing the entire 2005 campaign with a knee injury, he earned second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors last fall. He ranked second in the ACC and 31st nationally in tackles, posting 8.8 per game (114 total). He was also tied for second in the league in forced fumbles with 0.23 per contest.
The Aberdeen, Md., native was even more productive during ACC play, ranking first (11.2 pg) in tackles in league games.
Henderson was in Phoenix last month for the taping of Playboy's "College Football Preview," a one-hour nationally syndicated television show that will air shortly before the season begins. The complete squad will be released in the magazine's September issue.
Henderson and the Terps kick off the 2007 season on Saturday, Sept. 1 when they play host to Villanova at 6 p.m. from Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium.
Season tickets for this fall's home slate start as low as $162 and are on sale through the Maryland Athletics Ticket Office. Fans can contact 1-800-IM-A-TERP or click here.
