Four Baseball Players Honored on 2007 All-ACC Academic Team

July 11, 2007

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - A quartet of Maryland baseball players earned All-ACC Academic honors for the 2007 season, as announced on Monday by ACC Commissioner John D. Swofford.

Rising seniors Chad Durakis, Joe Palumbo and Mike Sufczynski, along with rising junior Mike Murphy, were all honored by the conference, after having strong seasons on and off the field. To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.

Durakis, a finance major, appeared in 52 games for the Terps in 2007 and finished with a .295 average, 52 hits, 14 doubles, and 24 RBIs. It was the second consecutive All-ACC Academic selection for the catcher.

Palumbo, who also majors in finance, started all but one game for the Terps, playing mostly in left field. He had 59 hits, 10 doubles, four homers and 35 RBIs for the year.

Sufczynski, a key relief pitcher, had 22 appearances for the Terps. The accounting major had three saves on the season.

Murphy, an infielder from Silver Spring, Md., who is majoring in business management, finished second on the team this spring with a .309 batting average and was the only Terrapin to start all 56 games. He led the team in hits (67), RBIs (38) and walks (28).
