COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland student-athletes are featured in the latest issue of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills newsletter. The NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program was developed by the NCAA to help student-athletes not only bridge the gap from college life to professional life, but to make meaningful contributions to their communities in the process. The article highlights the Terrapin student-athletes focus on strengthening their leadership roles not only on the sports field, but in the classroom and the community.
The following is an excerpt from the article:
Through the work of team captains who serve on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Terrapin student-athletes have strived to create a positive team culture and served as exemplary role models for other student- athletes and the general UMD campus population.
One of the major achievements accomplished through the SAAC's emphasis on leadership was the development of the "University of Maryland Terrapin Student-Athlete Honor Agreement". Through their commitment to this cause, the 2006-2007 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee established an honor agreement which acknowledges that the individual responsibility of a Terrapin student-athlete encompasses not only academic and athletic challenges, but also includes a commitment to sportsmanship, conduct, leadership and community.
Terrapin student-athletes strive to demonstrate leadership and act as positive role models in the community at all times. These actions and the leadership shown have been recognized both in the local community and throughout the ACC. This past year, Terrapin student-athletes demonstrated this leadership by participating in over 143,000 hours of community service and receiving two ACC Sportsmanship Awards in Field Hockey and Women's Cross Country.
