HANAHAN, S.C. - Senior Kelly Calkin fired a 2-under-par 70 to move up 36 spots on the leader board and lead University of Maryland golfers Monday in the second round of the Cougar Classic women's golf tournament being hosted by the College of Charleston.
Calkin's round just missed the best round of the day, which was a 69 posted by So-Hyun Park of Notre Dame as she took over the individual lead. Calkin went from a tie for 62nd to a tie for 26th with her strong round, as her 36-hole total of 147 has her eight shots behind Park.
As a team, Maryland shot a 303, with its two-round total of 607 putting the Terps in 17th place. The 20-team field for the Cougar Classic includes 12 teams that played in last year's NCAA Tournament and seven teams that finished the Spring 2007 season among the top 30 in the nation.
The Terps are five shots out of 14th place and only one stroke behind UNC Greensboro.
Also for Maryland, freshman Kerri Connolly was tied for 38th with a two-round total of 149, while Katie Trotter shot a 74 on Monday for a 150 total and a tie for 42nd place. Junior transfer Lara Peffley was tied for 91st at 161, with freshman Victoria Arena in a tie for 98th at 166.
Tennessee shot its second straight team round of 288 to take the team lead by three strokes over Notre Dame and five shots over Texas.
Park's 69 moved her past first-round leader and teammate Lisa Maunu, whose 66 Sunday put her atop the leader board and gives her a 140 total for the tournament. Tennessee's Marci Turner is also tied for second individually.
The third and final round of the Cougar Classic will be played on Tuesday.
