SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. - For the second straight tournament, a strong final round helped the University of Maryland move up the leaderboard to earn a tie for eighth in the team standings Tuesday at the Napa River Grill Cardinal Cup women's golf tournament hosted by the University of Louisville.
TheTerrapins fired a round of 299 as a team on Tuesday, moving up two spots in the standings. Maryland tied with Illinois State with a 916 total in the event, one shot ahead of Cincinnati and seven strokes better than Memphis. Only five teams shot better than 300 in the final round on Tuesday.
Senior Kelly Calkin led the Terrapins individually, closing with a 75 to post a 54-hole total of 225 and tie for 18th. Freshman Hilary Lawson, making her collegiate debut, led Maryland Tuesday with a 1-over-par 73 and a tie for 25th at 227. Lara Peffley and Katie Trotter each finished at 233 and a tie for 45th, while Kerry Connolly closed with a 75 Tuesday for a 236 total and a tie for 55th.
Notre Dame won the team competition, finishing at 878 and holding off a late charge by host Louisville. The Cardinals shot 291 on Tuesday to come within three strokes of the Fighting Irish. Augusta State was third at 890.
So-Hyun Park of Notre Dame finished at 3-under-par 213 to earn medalist honors, one shot better than Taryn Durham of Middle Tennessee State.
Maryland plays next on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at the Nittany Lion Fall Invitational hosted by Penn State.
