COLLEGE PARK, Md.- No. 2 Maryland field hockey jumps back into the ACC schedule hosting No. 5 Wake Forest on Saturday, Sept. 22, in a rematch of last year's NCAA Championship game, which the Terps won to claim its second-straight title. The game can be viewed through ACC Select and can be heard on WMUCsports.com.
The first 300 fans in attendance at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex will receive an NCAA Championship tote bag featuring the 2007 NCAA Tournament logo. The national semifinals and championship game will be hosted by the University of Maryland on Nov. 16 and 18. Tickets for the event are available for purchase through the Terrapin Ticket Office.
In what has become a heated rivalry, Maryland leads the all-time series, 18-10, but Wake Forest has won seven of the last 10 meetings. The last five matchups have been decided by no more than one a goal, including a penalty stroke decision in College Park in 2005.
Maryland is one of three teams remaining that is still undefeated, joined by No. 1 North Carolina and No. 19 Stanford. Freshman Katie O'Donnell (Blue Bell, Pa.) has not let up, leading the team and the ACC with nine goals. She is tied with fellow teammate sophomore Nicole Muracco (Sewell, N.J.) in goals scored. O'Donnell also leads the country with a 3.7 points per game average, also dishing out a team-best 11 assists for 29 points.
The Terps' defense, anchored by goalkeeper Kathryn Masson (Richmond, British Columbia) and defender Susie Rowe (London, England) has posted five shutouts this season and has not allowed a goal since September 8 against Ohio State. Its last three wins have come by virtue of a shutout, including victories over Northeaster (6-0), No. 11 Boston College (2-0) and No. 9 American (4-0).
Wake Forest is 5-2 on the season, winning its last four games after starting the season 1-2. The Deacons have scored just 18 goals this season, allowing 12. However, all five of their wins have been decided by two goals or less. One of Wake's losses was a 2-1 overtime setback to No. 1 UNC.
Saturday's game will mark the first of a four-game homestand. Admissions and parking to the event are free.
