Scouting The Golden Flashes
Kent State is 2-4-0 in the early stages of the 2007 season under the direction of coach Rob Marinaro, who in his seventh season with the Golden Flashes has compiled a record of 56-52-16 (.516).
Kent State started the season with three shutout losses. The first two came by 1-0 results on the road to UC Davis and Pacific, respectively. The Flashes then dropped their home opener to Wright State by a 4-0 score. They then went on the road again and picked up their first victory of the '07 campaign, a 2-1 win at St. Bonaventure. Last Sunday, Kent State dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 decision to Pitt that saw the Flashes give up the deciding goal in the waning seconds of the second half. They will head into College Park with some momentum after shutting out Youngstown State, 2-0, on Wednesday at home.
The Flashes have scored just five goals in their six matches with all five coming from a different student-athlete. Their leading scorer on the season is senior forward/midfielder Kimberly Dimitroff, who has a goal and an assist for three points.
Kent State has allowed nine goals on the year and has been out-shot by its opponents 100-71. Kris Nelson has logged all 540 minutes in goal for the Golden Flashes. The junior goalkeeper has a 1.50 GAA with a save percentage of .763.

Streaking Terps
For the first time since 2002, the Terps are riding a three-game winning streak. The last time Maryland won three consecutive games was Oct. 11-20 (2-0 d. Virginia 10/11; 3-0 d. George Mason 10/16; 3-2 d. at Clemson).
The last time a Maryland won three matches in a row by shutout was 1999. Maryland won 1-0 at George Mason (10/6), and 2-0 over Rutgers (10/8) and Navy (10/10), respectively, at home. That was the beginning of a five-game winning streak that included home wins over No. 9 Clemson (10/17), 2-1, and No. 11 Wake Forest (10/22), 1-0.
The current streak of three consecutive shutouts marks the eighth time in school history that the Terps have blanked opponents in back-to-back-to-back matches. Maryland has only had one streak longer than threre matches. That was in 1996 from Sept. 22-Oct.1. The Terps beat (in order): Texas, 2-0; No. 19 George Mason, 2-0; Brown, 4-0; No. 25 Wake Forest, 4-0; and UMBC, 8-0. That 1996 squad was ranked as high as fourth in the nation and finished with a 19-5-2 record - the best-ever for a Terps squad.
At Ludwig Field
Since its opening in 1995, Ludwig Field has proved to be a tremendous home-field advantage for the Terps women's soccer team. All-time Maryland is 83-35-13 (.683) at Ludwig Field.
Through the seasons, the Terps have had a knack for shutting teams out at Ludwig Field. Maryland has won 56 of its 83 games (67%) at Ludwig Field via shutout. Add in the nine 0-0 ties the Terps have had at Ludwig Field and it totals 65 times that Maryland has shutout its opponent in 131 games (49.6%).
Playing Overtime
The 0-0 tie with Eastern Kentucky marked the third-straight home opener that has ended in a scoreless tie. In 2005 and 2006 the Terps played to a 0-0 draw against Towson.
Maryland played five overtime games last season, going 0-1-4 in those matches. All four ties ended in 0-0 finishes, tying the 2006 Michigan Wolverines for the most 0-0 ties in a season in NCAA history.
During the past four seasons, Maryland has played 23 overtime games with a record of 4-6-13 in those games. So far this season, the Terps have played two overtime matches, going 1-1-1.
Offensive Defense
Maryland's starting defenders - Mary Casey, Ashly Kennedy and Mallory Baker - have all tallied points for the Terps this season. Casey is second on the team with four points on a goal and two assists, while Kennedy has netted a goal and Baker picked up one assist. That trio has accounted for 28% of Maryland's points this season.
Take A Shot
The 2007 season opener was one for the record books for the Terps. In the 0-0 tie with Eastern Kentucky, Maryland took a school record 55 shots. Nataly Arias led the Terps with 11 shots, while sophomore Emily Maynard took eight.
Arias Named To Elite Team Of The Week
Nataly Arias has been named to the SoccerBuzz Elite Team of the Week after scoring a pair of game-winnning goals for the Terps last weekend.
Arias started her weekend of heroics on Friday, Sept. 14, by finishing a Kaila Sciascia corner kick with a picture-perfect header in the 110th minute for a 1-0 double-overtime Maryland win over Dartmouth.
The Alexandria, Va., native followed up that performance with another game-winning goal in the Terps' 1-0 win over regional foe George Mason. Arias worked a terrific give-and-go with Maureen Dowling for the score. Arias received the ball back near the penalty kick stripe and finished the score into the left side of the Patriot net.
For her efforts, Arias was also selected as the University of Maryland female student-athlete of the week on umterps.com.
Pells Participating In Two National-Level Events For U.S. Soccer
Maryland assistant coach Laurie Pells will not be at the Kent State game. She is participating in two national-level events by U.S. Soccer. Pells was a featured speaker at the Coaching Symposium at the Women's Nike Friendlies that is taking place this week. Additionally, she will serve on the coaching staff for the Girls U.S. National Team during this fall, including the upcoming Nike Friendlies.
U.S. Soccer's Coaching Department is hosting the second annual Women's Nike Friendlies Coaching Symposium in conjunction with the 2007 Women's Nike Friendlies from Sept. 20-23 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The symposium includes nightly presentations on Sept. 20 and 21, as well as a match analysis on Sept. 22 at The Home Depot Center.
The Nike Friendlies is a high profile tournament featuring some of the top U15-U17 club teams in the country, as well as several of the girls U.S. National Teams. The event is scheduled from September 20-23. Pells will be working directly with the goalkeepers at this event. This is the second stint for Pells with the U.S. youth national team program, as she was the goalkeeper coach for the U14 girls national team in the summer of 2006.
Impact Freshmen
Through its first six games, Maryland has played seven freshmen, including four who have started matches.
Goalkeeper Yewande Balogun logged all 583 minutes for the Terps in their first six games and has a 0.46 GAA with four shutouts to her credit.
Mallory Baker and Caitlin McDowell each picked up their first collegiate assists in the 2-1 win over Fairleigh Dickinson. Baker started each of the first two games for Maryland, while McDowell earned the start vs. FDU.
Kylie Ricker earned her first collegiate start against Loyola Marymount at the Hoosier Classic on Sept. 9, and responded with the first goal of her career.
Playing The Best
Once again in 2007, Maryland will play a challenging schedule.
The Terps take on seven teams ranked in this weeks NSCAA poll. The Terps play No. 7 Virginia (Oct. 25), No. 8 North Carolina (Oct. 7), No. 9 Boston College (Nov. 1), No. 11 Florida State (Oct. 11), No. 20 Clemson (Sept. 27), and No. 22 USC (L, 2-1 OT). Maryland also hosts Wake Forest (Oct. 5), which was ranked previously and received votes this week.
Beating The Best
During seven of the past nine seasons, including 2007, Maryland has at least one upset win or tie of a top-10 ranked team: 4-3 win at No. 9 Duke on Sept. 19, 1999 and a 2-1 victory over Clemson on Oct. 17, 1999; a 3-1 win over No. 4 Penn State on Aug. 29, 2000; a 1-0 overtime over No. 8 Clemson on Oct. 13, 2001 and a 1-1 tie at No. 2 North Carolina on Nov. 1, 2002. The Terps stunned No. 3 UCLA 2-1 at the Virginia Soccer Classic on Sept. 12, 2004. A month and a half later, Maryland beat No. 10 Duke 1-0 in overtime at Ludwig Field. The Terps topped all of those victories with a 1-0 shutout of No. 2 seed Penn State in the 2004 NCAA Tournament. The win also snapped the Nittany Lions 39-game home winning streak and was head coach Paula Wilkins' first-ever loss at Jeffrey Field. The Terps extended that streak in 2005 with a 2-1 upset of No. 8 Boston College on Oct. 29 at Ludwig Field. Jeffrey Field proved lucky for the Terps again in the 2006 season opener as they knocked off No. 10 Tennessee 1-0 at the Penn State Classic on Aug. 25.
Dreska To Miss 2007 Season
Sophomore midfielder Molly Dreska will miss the entire 2007 season after suffering a knee injury during the summer. She missed the Terps' final five games of the 2006 season due to injury as well.
