Terps Help US Field Hockey Place Third at International Tournament

Jan. 30, 2008

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Five Terrapins led the US National Field Hockey team to a third-place finish at the Four Nation Tournament held in Argentina over the weekend. Former Terrapin All-American Dina Rizzo earned her 100th international cap in the final game, a 3-1 victory for the Americans.

Former Terrapins Lauren Powley, Sara Silvetti and Keli Smith all saw playing time at the tournament, which included some of the world's top teams such as Argentina, Germany and South Africa. Current Terp Katie O'Donnell also played in the tournament. She finished her first semester at Maryland in the fall.

The Americans opened the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Germany and followed with a 4-4 tie against South Africa. Rizzo accounted for one of the team's goals in the game. USA fell to Argentina, 2-0, in the final day of pool play, then defeated South Africa, 1-0, in the rematch to place third.

"This was a good way to start preparation for the Olympic Qualifier," said Rizzo, who was a 2001 first team All-American while in College Park. "We still have a lot to do and the more games we play and the more experience we get, will help us get better. We have long term goals we're focused on and we'll continue to work hard towards them."

The U.S. will continue to train for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament which will be held in Kazan, Russia, April 19-26. Belgium, France, India, the Netherlands Antilles and Russia are also in the pool. For more information on U.S. Field Hockey, visit www.usfieldhockey.com.
