Freshman Lisa Scott recorded a team-high 10 kills and five blocks for the Terrapins, but the University of Maryland volleyball fell to the Virginia Cavaliers, 3-1, in an Atlantic Coast Conference match Saturday evening at Comcast Pavilion.
The Cavaliers (10-7, 2-3 ACC) defeated the Terps (5-12, 1-4 ACC) by scores of 26-24, 19-25, 25-16 and 25-19.
The Terps fell behind 3-0 in the first set, but fought back to take the lead at 7-6 on a kill by junior Katie Usher. After falling behind 14-10, the Terps rallied again to tie the score at 17. Maryland eventually took a 21-20 lead and the teams played to a 24-24 tie.
However, the Cavaliers took the first set on a Maryland attack error and kill by Simone Asque.
The second set was tight from the get-go. The Terps went up by four on a couple occasions, but Virginia had an answer every time and took the lead briefly at 14-13. However, the Terps rallied and never trailed again in the set.
With the score knotted at 18, the Terps scored seven of eight points to claim a six-point victory to even the match at 1-1. Senior Maggie Schmelzle sealed the win with a service ace.
Virginia came out firing on all cylinders coming out of the 10-minute break, though. The Cavaliers grabbed an early 7-1 lead before the Terps responded, scoring five straight points to get within one, 7-6. Sophomore libero Bethany Springer had two service aces in the run.
Maryland could never quite even the score, however, though it did get within one again at 10-9. Unfortunately for the Terps, the Cavaliers responded with a run of their own to go back up by seven at 17-11 and never looked back en route to a 25-16 victory.
The Cavaliers went up big early in the fourth set, grabbing a 12-5 lead. The Terps got within five at one point, but could inch no closer as Virginia took the set, 25-19, to win the set and the match.
Schmelzle had two service aces for Maryland, giving her 95 in her career, putting her in seventh place in school history. Schmelze had 16 digs, one of three Terps in double figures.
Freshman outside hitter Maddi Lee had nine kills for Maryland. Freshman Sharon Strizak led the Terps with 18 assists. Springer had 19 digs and sophomore Brittney Grove added 17 digs.
Lauren Dickson paced the Cavaliers with 12 kills while Sydney Hill recorded 10 blocks.
Maryland returns to action Friday when it travels to Florida State. The Terps will be at Miami next Sunday.
