ROSLYN, Pa. -
University of Maryland running back Da'Rel Scott was one of nine players added to the watch list for the 2008 Maxwell Award, which is bestowed upon the college player of the year. The Maxwell Football Club made the announcement Tuesday.
Scott has posted 482 rushing yards this season and hauled in eight passes for 82 yards.
He ranks second in the Atlantic Coast Conference and 31st in the nation (Football Bowl Subdivision) in rushing (96.4 yards per game). The sophomore from Conshohocken, Pa., also ranks fifth in the ACC and 82nd nationally in all-purpose yards (113.0 ypg).
Scott, who missed the Eastern Michigan game (Sept. 20) with a shoulder injury, is also tied for the team lead in touchdowns (four).
The Maxwell Award is presented in honor of Robert W. (Tiny) Maxwell, legendary college player, official and sports columnist. Tim Tebow of Florida won the 2007 Maxwell Award.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced in early November and three finalists named on Nov. 25. The winner will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show in December. The formal presentation of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah's Entertainment Atlantic City on March 6, 2009.
