COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
University of Maryland women's soccer freshman Becky Kaplan was named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week for her efforts last week against No. 9 Florida State and Miami.
Kaplan, a defender from Oyster Bay, N.Y., helped hold the Seminoles, who are averaging nearly three goals per game in 2008, scoreless in regulation in FSU's 1-0 win in overtime. She also played a key role in the Terps' 1-0 win over Miami on Oct. 5, helping limit the Hurricanes to just five shots and clearing a rebound from in front of the Maryland net in the final minutes of the second half to preserve the victory.
Kaplan has seen action in all 12 of Maryland's matches this season. She has started nine of those matches at three different positions - offensive center midfielder, defensive center midfielder and center back, where she's played the last seven matches.
Kaplan and the rest of the Terrapins will host No. 11 Duke on Sunday, Oct. 12, at Ludwig Field. The match, which is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, is a part of Under Armour's Power in Pink campaign to raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer.
