BLACKSBURG, Va. - Katie Usher led the Terps with nine kills on .316 hitting with three blocks in a Saturday night volleyball match at Virginia Tech, won by the Hokies, 3-0, 25-17, 25-19 and 25-19.
Maryland (6-23, 2-15 ACC) led by three points early in the first set, 10-7, thanks to back-to-back Taylor Parrish attack errors. However, the Hokies (20-8, 11-6 ACC) went on a 6-1 run to take a 13-11 lead and never looked back.
The Tech lead was three at 18-15, with the Terps still within striking distance, but the Hokies finished the set on a 7-2 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Other than a Lisa Scott block to put the Terps up 2-1 early in the second set, the Hokies maintained control throughout set No. 2. A pair of Maryland runs cut five-point deficits to two-point deficits and Scott recorded a kill to get Maryland within one at 19-18, but Tech closed the set on another big run, scoring six of the final seven points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Terps looked strong in the third set as a pair of Brittney Grove service aces put Maryland up five at 10-5. Up 11-6, however, the Hokies had another answer, embarking on an 11-3 run to take a three-point lead of its own, 17-14. Maryland got as close as one three times the rest of the session, but couldn't catch the Hokies as Tech took a second straight 25-19 victory and a 3-0 victory to sweep the season series.
Scott led the Terps with six blocks and Mary Beth Brown added four more. Senior Maggie Schmelzle added 12 digs to lead the team as she inched closer to the No. 2 spot on Maryland's all-time list.
Sophomore Felicia Willoughby had a match-high 13 kills for the Hokies, hitting .318 with four blocks. Kristen Cunningham had 10 kills for Tech.
Maryland is at Clemson and Georgia Tech next weekend before finishing the season the following Wednesday at Boston College.
