ATLANTA -
Senior Maggie Schmelzle and junior Katie Usher both reached career milestones in the University of Maryland volleyball team's 3-0 loss at Georgia Tech Saturday evening.
The Yellow Jackets (20-9, 12-7 ACC) defeated the Terps (6-25, 2-17 ACC) 25-12, 25-19 and 25-13.
However, Schmelzle finished with a team-high 11 digs to tie former high school and college teammate Beth Gillming for second place on Maryland's career list with 1,582. Usher recorded a team-high five blocks to reach 400 career blocks and tie Sherry Smith for fifth on the program's all-time list. Usher is the second Terp this season to reach the 400-block milestone, as Mary Beth Brown also did so earlier this year.
The Yellow Jackets controlled the match from start to finish, out-hitting the Terps .245 to .009 while only falling behind the Terps on five points and never trailing by more than one at any given time.
Georgia Tech led 9-7 early in the opening set, but quickly took control, scoring 10 of the next 11 points to take an 11-point lead en route to a 13-point win.
Maryland trailed 15-8 in the second set, but charged back on a 9-1 run to take a brief, 17-16 lead. The Terps had three blocks in the run, but that was the last time they led in the session. Georgia Tech answered with a 5-0 run of its own and never looked back, winning by six points.
The Terps scored two of the first three points in the third set, but the Yellow Jackets cruised from there, holding a double-digit lead for a large portion of the set.
Usher paced Maryland with eight kills on .263 hitting with her five blocks. Freshman Maddi Lee finished with seven kills.
Chrissy DeMichelis posted a match-high 13 kills for the Yellow Jackets while Talisa Kellogg finished with 10.
The Terps close the regular season Wednesday afternoon at Boston College. The season finale will be broadcast online via ACC Select.
