COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Postgame notes following Maryland's 37-3 loss to Florida State.
Record-Setting Smith: By returning five kickoffs for 106 yards versus Florida State, WR Torrey Smith set a Maryland record for kickoff return yards in a season, now with 860. The previous team record was 847 kickoff return yards by Josh Wilson in 2006.
Heyward-Bey Leading the Way: WR Darrius Heyward-Bey has been a catalyst for the Terps offense all season, and he continued to produce on Saturday. The junior wideout recorded three receptions for 22 yards. Heyward-Bey, who ranked seventh in the ACC in receiving yards entering Saturday's game, now has caught at least one pass in 33 of the last 36 games dating back to 2006.
Chart Climber: Heyward-Bey has continued his ascent through Maryland's receiving records this season. With his performance against the Seminoles, he moved into a tie with Frank Wycheck for third place in school history with 134 career receptions. Now with 2,041 career receiving yards, Heyward-Bey stands just 18 yards behind Geroy Simon to claim second place all-time at Maryland in career receiving yards.
Great Scott: Despite being only a sophomore, RB Da'Rel Scott has been Maryland's leading rusher in all but one game this season, and Saturday proved no exception. The Terps running back rushed for 82 yards on 12 carries against Florida State. His 41-yard burst up the middle during the third quarter marked his fifth rush of 35 yards or more this season. His season rushing total of 940 is the most by a Maryland player since Chris Downs rushed for 1,154 yards in 2002, and Scott now owns the 11th-highest single-season rushing total in team history.
Interception-Less Streak Ends: When QB Chris Turner's pass was picked off by Florida State DB Kenny Ingram during the second quarter, it ended an impressive streak without throwing an interception. Prior to that play, Turner had attempted 132 passes without throwing an interception and had thrown just one pick in his previous 197 pass attempts.
Tackle Machines: LBs Alex Wujciak and Dave Philistin have paced the Terps in tackles all season and continued to do so on Saturday. Wujciak tallied 11 tackles and Philistin added 11 stops against the Seminoles. They entered Saturday's game ranked second and 12th, respectively, in the ACC in tackles.
Gronk' Goin' Strong: TE Dan Gronkowski continued to serve as a reliable target for Turner during Saturday's game. The senior registered a team-high four receptions for 46 yards during his final game at Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium.
Wise Beyond his Years: DB Anthony Wiseman has developed throughout the 2008 season, his first as a starter, and had one of his better games against Florida State. The junior cornerback notched eight tackles and two pass-breakups on Saturday.
Elementary My Dear Watson: TE Lansford Watson has been relied upon primarily for blocking this season, but he came through with a big catch against the Seminoles. The redshirt freshman took a catch-and-run a career-long 32 yards during the game's opening drive.
Through the Uprights: PK Obi Egekeze hit 1 of 2 field goals against Florida State. His 34-yarder during the third quarter moved him into a tie with Dan DeArmas (1988-91) for seventh place on Maryland's all-time list with 32 career field goals. He has now connected on 25 of 29 career field goal attempts (.862) during conference play.
Streaks continue: Several Terps extended streaks on Saturday. DL Jeremy Navarre has now played in 47 consecutive games, and his 45 career starts are the most on the team. OL Edwin Williams has now started 36 consecutive games, tops on the offense.
Attendance: A sellout crowd of 51,620 braved the cold weather to attend Saturday night's nationally-televised game. It marked the 20th-largest crowd in the history of Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium and the 15th-largest under Friedgen.
