GREENSBORO, N.C. - Junior goalkeeper Mary Casey of the University of Maryland women's soccer team was named to the All-ACC first team that was released by the conference office on Tuesday, November 4.
After starting the first four matches of the season as a center back, Casey, a native of Centreville, Va., took over the starting keeper spot for the Terps in the fifth game and immediately made an impact. She finished the season ranked sixth in the ACC with a 0.90 goals against average. Casey also finished fourth in save percentage (.800) and sixth in saves per game (3.38).
"We're happy to see Mary honored in the right way," said Maryland head coach Brian Pensky. "The most impressive characteristic about Mary is her unselfishness. For three years in this program her only statement is `I just want to play.' When asked whether she considers herself a defender or a goalkeeper. This fall in a matter of one week, she went from being one of the best defenders in the ACC to the out-and-out best goalkeeper in the conference. She's just a special athlete and it's nice to see her recognized."
Casey becomes just the second Terrapin goalkeeper to be named to the All-ACC first team, joining Nikki Resnick, who was first-team honoree in 2005 and 2006.
