COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Five University of Maryland volleyball players were honored on Senior Night Saturday in a match won by the visiting Florida State Seminoles, 25-20, 25-15 and 25-16.
Seniors Mary Beth Brown, Maggie Schmelzle, Tedi Doucet, Meredith Doyle and Kathleen Wilson were all recognized with their families before the match.
The Terrapins (6-21, 2-13 ACC) began the first set with a lot of emotion and the Seminoles (17-8, 9-6 ACC) responded, as well. A Brown kill gave Maryland a 14-13 lead midway through the set, a set that saw 10 ties and six lead changes.
However, the Terps would not lead again. Tied at 16 apiece, the Seminoles scored four straight points to begin to pull away. Maryland got no closer than three and Florida State went on to win by five points, 25-20.
Maryland regrouped in the second set and jumped out to an 8-5 lead on a block by Brittney Grove and Lisa Scott. Unfortunately for the Terps, Florida State went on a 6-0 run off the serve of Ashlee Moon to take a three-point lead of its own.
Two kills each from Katie Usher and Maddi Lee helped Maryland knot the score at 13-13, but the Seminoles answered with a 7-0 run to all but clinch the set. Florida State eventually won the set by 10 points, 25-15.
Florida State grabbed a quick nine-point lead in the third and final set, 10-5, forcing a Maryland timeout. The break could not stop the Seminoles, however, as they scored four consecutive points out of the break to take a commanding 14-5 lead. The Seminoles led by as many as 11 points and won the match by a final margin of 25-16.
The Seminoles hit .292 in the match and held the Terps to .096. Stephanie Neville paced the Seminoles with 14 kills on .476 hitting while Lauren Richardson and Jordana Price both posted 12 kills. Four Seminoles had double-digit digs, led by Moon's 18.
Usher led the Terps with eight kills on .333 hitting and also added three blocks. Sophomore libero Bethany Springer finished with a team-high 16 digs.
Former Maryland head coach Janice Kruger was honored before the match, prior to the Senior Night ceremonies.
The Terps still have five road matches this season, including a trip to Virginia and Virginia Tech next Friday and Saturday, respectively.
