COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's lacrosse team defeated the England national team, 22-7, in exhibition action on Valentine's Day at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Terrapins, ranked No. 4 in the preseason by Lacrosse Magazine, scored 22 times on 30 shots for a 73.3 shooting percentage.
Senior Casey Magor led the team with five goals on five shots while adding an assist. Classmate Lauren Cohen had two goals and three assists while Kelly Kasper had a hat trick to go along with a helper. Sophomore Amanda Spinnenweber also added three goals.
Senior Katie Princiotto recorded a goal and an assist while sophomore Caitlyn McFadden had a pair of goals on just two shots. Senior Dana Dobbie picked up nine draw controls which equaled the entire England team. Maryland owned a 22-9 advantage in draws.
Senior Allie Buote was strong in goal for the Terps, giving up just three goals in almost 40 minutes of action while making four saves.
Juniors Alex Mavris and Brittany Jones contributed a combined five points off the bench. Mavris had two goals and an assist while Jones tallied a point in both categories.
Alice Kay led the English side with three goals and an assist while Charlotte Finnegan and Hannah Nugent both contributed a goal. Hannah Barnsley picked up a pair of scores off the bench.
Maryland's seniors combined for 18 of the starting lineup's 24 points. Five newcomers recorded a point in the win with Jones, junior Kate Faas, and freshman Helen McCutcheon scoring goals. Freshmen Brandi Jones and Colleen Dawson both picked up assists.
The Jones sisters, from Poway, Calif., made the most of their first game in a Terps uniform together. With just under nine minutes left in the first half, Brandi assisted Brittany's goal to put Maryland up 10-1.
The Terps will now focus on the regular season which opens next weekend. Maryland begins 2008 in Amherst, Mass. to take on Massachusetts February 22 before traveling east to open up ACC play at Boston College on February 24.
