PRINCETON, N.J. -
After losing the first two games at the Triton Invitational last weekend, the Maryland women's water polo team reversed its fortune by winning its first two games of the Princeton Invitational on Saturday, beating Siena, 8-3, and Villanova, 14-2, before falling to No. 18 Indiana, 12-6.
Freshman Maggie Eicks had a big day for the Terps (4-3), recording six goals on the day, with three of them coming against Villanova. Eicks also recorded four assists in the first game of the day against Siena.
Elizabeth Hopkins also had a big day, recording four goals over the three games, and Laurel Laidlaw scored three of her own. Christen Vagts, Jill Lau, Meghan Powers, Casey Mills and Shannon Simerly each had a pair of goals on the day, and freshman Stephanie Ragheb scored the first goal of her college career against Villanova.
The Terrapins started off slow against Siena then pulled it together against Villanova, scoring 13 goals in the first half. The team also had a strong start against Indiana, leading 2-1 after the first quarter, but could not match the Hoosiers physically.
"We've got to come back and play well against Harvard tomorrow. We'll see Indiana again in two weeks, so we've got some work ahead of us," said Coach Carl Salyer.
The Terps face Harvard Sunday morning to finish the tournament and will play host for the Maryland Invitational on February 23 and 24 at the Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium in College Park.
