2008 Terrapin Invitational Schedule (updated)
Feb. 23, 2008
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The University of Maryland women's water polo team had a strong showing in its home opener.
The Terps (8-3) won all three of their matches and set a season high in goals twice during Saturday's Terrapin Invitational, which is being held on campus at the Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium.
In all, nine teams played 10 games throughout the day. The two-day tournament concludes tomorrow with five more games.
In the third game of the tournament, junior Christen Vagts scored four goals to lead Maryland to a 16-6 victory over Iona College (0-2). The 16 goals eclipsed the Terps season high of 15 set vs. The Redlands earlier this month.
During evening action, Vagts chipped in two goals in the Terps' 9-8 win over Marist, including the game-winner with 4:10 to go in the game.
Maryland capped off the day by matching its season high in goals in a 16-9 triumph over Villanova (0-4). Freshman Meghan Powers led the way with four goals. Jessica Ernst and Colleen Shaw added three scores apiece for the Terps.
Ernst, just a freshman, junior Blaise Stanicic and sophomore Shannon Simerly each scored twice for the Terps in the win over Iona.
Maryland led the Gaels 6-2 at halftime, but broke the game open in the third period, posting seven of the eight goals.
The Maryland-Marist matchup was one of the most competitive contests of the day. The Red Foxes (3-4) led 7-4 in the third period before the Terps rallied by scoring five of the last six goals.
The Terps have now won eight times in their last nine outings. Maryland will face Wagner College (1-4) at 11:45 a.m. Sunday.
Princeton was just as impressive as the Terps, winning all three of its games. The 18th-ranked Tigers defeated St. Francis College, 13-2, in the second game of the day. The Tigers also edged Marist, 10-8, in the opening game of the afternoon session and came back in the evening to defeat Iona, 12-6.
In the opening game of the day, Wagner defeated George Washington University (2-5), 12-11, in overtime.
In other action, No. 19 Bucknell (9-2) won both its contests, defeating Villanova, 18-5, and Wagner, 17-7. St. Francis topped George Washington, 14-5.
Play continues through Sunday afternoon. Results will be posted throughout Saturday and Sunday.
Tournament Notes: Slippery Rock was scheduled to be the 10th team in the tournament, but is not participating. Therefore, the schedule has been adjusted. Maryland and Wagner each added one game to their schedules, and Princeton had its game vs. Slippery Rock replaced by playing Marist Saturday afternoon.
