Kerri Connolly was tied for fifth and Kelly Calkin was tied for ninth and the pair of top-10 finishers had the University of Maryland in a tie for fourth place in the team standings after Sunday's opening round of the Cuthbert Cup women's golf tournament being hosted by the College of Charleston.
The event, being held in conjunction with a men's tournament, is being played on two courses at Kiawah Island. The women played Cougar Point on Sunday, with the men playing at Osprey Point.
The Maryland men were in sixth place in the team standings after the opening round.
Connolly fired a 1-under-par 71 at Cougar Point and ended the first round as one of six players under par. She fired a 34 on the back nine to rally to the finish, matching the lowest back-nine score of any player in the field.
Calkin went 37-36 to finish at 73 and tie for ninth on Sunday for the Terps. Hilary Lawson was tied for 14th with a 74 that featured a 34 on the front nine. Katie Trotter shot a 78 for a tie for 37th and Lara Peffley was tied for 49th at 80.
As a team, the Maryland women fired a 296 in the opening round and were just two shots out of second place. The host Cougars led the women's team standings on Sunday after firing a 287 total.
The second round of the women's tournament moves to Osprey Point on Monday, with the men shifting to Cougar Point. The third round for each division will be played Tuesday.
