Terp Women Place Third at Spring Opener

Feb. 26, 2008

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Inclement weather forced the cancellation of Tuesday's final round of the Cuthbert Cup golf tournament being hosted by the College of Charleston. Results through 36 holes have been made the official final results of the event, at which the University of Maryland women finished third as a team, while Kelly Calkin and Kerri Connolly each tied for third individually.

Calkin and Connolly had 36-hole totals of 145 heading into Tuesday's final round. On Monday, Calkin shot an even-par 72 and Connolly fired a 74. They finished three shots behind Steffi Kirchmayr and Courtney Brink of Charleston, who tied atop the leader board at 142.

As a team, the Terrapins finished in third place in the women's division after shooting a 297 on Monday. Their two-round total of 593 trailed only the host Cougars, who were at 583 after a 296 on Monday, and UNC Wilmington, which shot the best team round in the field on Monday at 290 and pulled within three shots of Charleston.

Also for Maryland, Hilary Lawson tied for 17th at 150 after a 76 on Monday, while senior Katie Trotter shot a 75 Monday for a 153 total and a tie for 32nd. Lara Peffley finished in 51st place at 159.

Brink, who was in a three-way tie for the lead, shot a 73 on Monday, while Kirchmayr had a 72 to pull even with her teammate in the battle for medalist honors.

The Cuthbert Cup is played in a unique format in collegiate golf, with a special trophy available to the school that has the combined low score for its men's and women's teams. The Maryland men finished in fourth place in the team standings.

Maryland placed third in the combined scoring, 11 shots behind the College of Charleston, which was third on the men's side and won the women's division by three shots over UNC Wilmington, which was second combined just two shots back.

The Terrapin women play next on March 9 to 11 at the Pinehurst Challenge.
