COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's water polo team opens the 2008 season this weekend when it travels to San Diego, Calif., for the Triton Invitational.
The tournament, which is being held at UC-San Diego, kicks off Saturday when the Terps play San Diego State at 9 a.m. PT, the first match of the two-day event.
The tournament features some of the top teams in the country as 11 of the 16 participants are ranked in the top 20.
Maryland will play four matches over the weekend. Should the Terps defeat San Diego State, they will play at 3:30 p.m. Saturday against the winner of the UC-San Diego-Indiana match from earlier in the day. If they lose to the Aztecs, they'll play the loser of the UC-San Diego-Indiana match at 2 p.m.
The Terrapins will play two more games Sunday, with opponents and times dependent on Saturday's results.
The Terps are ranked fourth in this week's CWPA Poll.
Maryland, about to enter its fifth year as a varsity sport, finished the 2007 season sixth in the final CWPA poll after posting a 4-2 Southern Division record.
The Terps, who returns 13 letterwinners and eight of their top nine scorers from last season, are also receiving votes in this week's National Collegiate Women's Poll.
