Freshmen Lead Terps in Second Round at Pinehurst

PINEHURST, N.C. - Freshmen Kerri Connolly and Hilary Lawson each shot rounds of 78 to lead University of Maryland players Monday in the second round of the Pinehurst Challenge women's golf tournament being played at Pinehurst No. 8.
Connolly and Lawson helped the Terrapins to a 315 team score on Monday, good for a two-day total of 638. Maryland fell two spots to 13th in the team standings after starting the day in a tie for 11th. The Terrapins are still only six shots out of the top 10.
Katie Trotter, who shot a 78 to lead Maryland on Sunday, still stands as the Terps' top player on the individual leader board. Coupled with an 80 on Monday, Trotter is tied for 35th at 158. Connolly is tied for 44th at 160, with Lawson and Kelly Calkin posting 36-hole totals of 161, as Calkin shot a 79 on Monday. Lara Peffley is at 165 and tied for 77th.
East Tennessee held onto its lead in the team standings, posting a 304 on Monday after a 307 on Sunday. The Mocs still have a four-shot lead on the field. East Carolina moved from third to second after shooting a 302 on Monday, while UNC Greensboro and Chattanooga are in third at 620.
Steffy Kirchmayr of Charleston also remains atop the leader board at 148 and is tied with Laura Jansone of East Tennessee State, who made up three shots on the leader following a second-round 72. Christine Wolf of Chattanooga, who opened with a 73 on Sunday, shot a 79 on Monday and fell to 10th.
Kirchmayr and Jansone lead by one stroke over Emma deGroot of Chattanooga, Emelie Lind of East Carolina and Lucy Gould of East Tennessee State.
The third and final round of the Pinehurst Challenge will be played on Tuesday in a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
