Calkin Matches Tourney Record at Pinehurst

PINEHURST, N.C. - Kelly Calkin of the University of Maryland equaled the tournament record with a 3-under-par 69 to move up 38 spots on the leader board in Tuesday's final round of the Pinehurst Challenge women's golf tournament being played at Pinehurst No. 8.
Calkin, a Terrapin senior, moved from a tie for 54th to a tie for 16th at the end of the day by matching her best round as a collegian. It was also the first round in the 60s by a Terrapin this season and gave Calkin her fifth top-20 finish in seven events this year.
Her round helped the Terrapins finish the tournament with a 298 and move from 13th to ninth in the final team standings. Maryland finished just one shot out of eighth place after its 298 marked the second-lowest round of any team in the three-day event.
East Carolina shot 295 on Tuesday to move past first- and second-round leader East Tennessee State and win the team competition with a 910 total. ETSU finished second at 920 after firing a 309 in the final round. Augusta State placed third at 924.
Also for Maryland, senior Katie Trotter moved from 35th to a tie for 23rd at 231 following a final-round 73. Hilary Lawson tied for 54th at 239 after a 78 on Tuesday, while Kerri Connolly tied for 59th at 240 with a final-round 80. Lara Peffley finished at 243 and tied for 73rd after a 78 on Tuesday.
Steffi Kirchmayr of Charleston went wire-to-wire to finish with medalist honors after matching Calkin's tournament-record 69 and earning a 217 total. She won by four strokes over Emelie Lind of East Carolina, with Emma deGroot of Chattanooga in third at 223.
Maryland plays next at the John Kirk Lady Panther Intercollegiate in Stockbridge, Ga., on March 31 and April 1.
