STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. -
University of Maryland senior Kelly Calkin was tied for eighth individually with a 3-over-par 76 following Monday's opening round of the John Kirk / Lady Panther Intercollegiate women's golf tournament being hosted by Georgia State University.
Calkin shot a 37 on the back nine to finish in the top 10 in the event, played at the Eagles Landing Country Club. She led the Terrapins to a 323 total and ninth place in the team standings. Maryland was just five shots out of sixth after the first of two rounds in the tournament.
Host Georgia State led after the first round with a 300. Jacksonville State was second at 308 with Western Carolina third at 312.
Also for Maryland on Monday, Kerry Connolly and Lara Peffley were tied for 49th with opening-round 82s, Katie Trotter was tied for 56th at 83 and Hilary Lawson opened with an 88 and was tied for 70th.
Temperatures were in the 40s on a windy day and the course included some puddles from a hard rain on Sunday.
Jessica Steward of Miami and Sandra Maier of Georgia State tied for the individual lead at 72. Anna Scott of Georgia State and Suzanne Stanley of Mississippi State were one stroke back after the first round of the 36-hole event.
Tuesday's second and final round tees off in the morning.
