DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Senior Katie Trotter fired an opening-round 75 to lead the University of Maryland to eighth place in the team standings Friday at the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference women's golf championship being played at the LPGA International complex.
As a team, the Terrapin posted a 307 in the first round. Maryland was only eight shots out of fifth place in a strong field that includes six teams among the top 40 in the nation.
Virginia shot a 4-under-par team round of 284 and finished the first day with a 10-stroke advantage over 12-time defending champion Duke. Florida State was third at 296.
Trotter had a solid opening round for the Terrapins, going through the tough Legends Course layout with 14 pars. She was 2-over after three holes, but settled down over the rest of the day. She birdied the 18th hole to finish her 3-over-par round of 75 and finish the day in a tie for 18th.
Trotter, a senior from Pittsburgh, Pa., owns the Terrapins' best-ever individual finish at the ACCs with a fifth in the 2006 tournament.
Fellow senior Kelly Calkin had an up-and-down day on Friday. After a birdie on the first hole, she went five over on a stretch from the fourth through the seventh. She also settled down later in the round, shooting a 37 on the back nine to finish at 77 and a tie for 28th.
Freshman Hilary Lawson matched Calkin's 77 with another steady round in her ACC Championship debut. She shot a 2-over-par 38 on the back after a double-bogey on 10 and finished with eight straight pars.
Kerri Connolly was tied for 32nd at 78 after a similar 14-par circuit, shooting a 38 on the front nine. Carla Wasienko, a junior making her second appearance in the Terps' lineup this season, was tied for 42nd after an opening-round 88.
Virginia players held down the top three spots on the individual leaderboard. Joy Kim fired a 3-under-par 69 to take a one-shot lead over teammate Callie Nielson. Jennie Arsenault of Virginia was tied with Jennifer Pandolfi of Duke and Natalie Sheary of Wake Forest were tied for third at 71, with only those five players under par after the first round.
The second round tees off at 8 a.m. on Saturday, with the final round scheduled to begin Sunday at 7:30 a.m. Highlights of the weekend rounds are available at ACCSelect.com. Live scoring throughout the ACC Women's Championship is available at www.golfstat.com.
