DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Senior Kelly Calkin fired a 1-under-par round of 71 Saturday to lead University of Maryland players at the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference women's golf championship being played at the Legends Course at the LPGA International resort.
Calkin's 71 gave her a 36-hole total of 148 and a tie for 11th place heading into Sunday's final round. Calkin took advantage of three straight birdies from the eighth through 10th holes to erase a double bogey on No. 7. She ten fell back to even with a bogey on 11 before a birdie on 16 gave her the sub-par finish.
As a team, Calkin's round helped the Terps move up two spots on the leaderboard into sixth. Maryland moved past 38th-ranked NC State into sixth by shooting a 306 on Saturday and finishing the day with a 613 total. The Terps were just seven shots out of a top-five finish in the field that includes six teams ranked in the top 40 in the nation.
Also for Maryland, senior Katie Trotter posted her second straight 75 and her 150 total tied her for 16th. Freshman Kerri Connolly was tied for 32nd at 157 after a 79 on Saturday, while Hilary Lawson posted an 81 for a 158 total and a tie for 35th. Carla Wasienko was 43rd at 171 after shooting an 83 on Saturday.
