On May 3, the American Cancer Society held its annual 12-hour walk-a-thon, Relay for Life at the University of Maryland. From 6:00 p.m. on May 3 to 6:00 a.m. on May 4, the event provided the opportunity for the University of Maryland community to raise money and awareness to help support research for the fight against cancer. Additionally, it also allowed the community and participants to remember and honor loved ones that have survived, are currently battling, or have passed on because of cancer.
For the fourth-straight year, Maryland student-athletes had a strong presence at the event. Not only were there 112 athletes present at the opening ceremony, but through the course of the event 193 athletes were in attendance. Some athletes came for an hour or two to show their support, while others took part in several of the entertainment activities provided, such as a 5v5 soccer tournament, flag football, and the on-site fund raising Miss Relay pageant.
During the Miss Relay pageant our very own Hudson Taylor (wrestling) and Paul Keeley, younger brother of Danielle Keeley (field hockey), put on their most flattering female attire. Most importantly, they were equipped with a purse, and participated in the on-site fund-raising contest. With their combined efforts, they raised a total of $158.00 and swept the competition and helped Terp student-athletes leave their mark on the event.
The effort of Hudson and Paul during the pageant provides a glimpse into the fund-raising efforts of all the athletes combined. Together, Maryland student-athletes raised over $4,100 in donations to the American Cancer Society.
Overall, the event and participation was a success, and next year Maryland student-athletes hope to increase their fund-raising efforts and participation. Our appreciation goes out to everyone who aided in our efforts to support the American Cancer Society and we look forward to your continued support next year.
Student-Athlete Comments:
"I came to Relay For Life as a team event...which ended up being a really touching experience and personal experience for me." - Ellen Ott (field hockey)
"Both of my grandparents had cancer. I now only have one grandparent, and I walk for her." - Nina Rossi (women's swimming)
"It was great to see the number of athletes show up at some point during the event and give support to the Relay for Life. I think those who were present for the survivor walk and Luminaria ceremonies were really touched and made aware of the true essence of Relay For Life and how we all can join in the fight against cancer." - Danielle Keeley (field hockey)
