June 20, 2008

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland water polo standout Blaise Stanicic was named recently an honorable mention All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches, the first all-American in the five-year history of Maryland water polo.

Stanicic, a junior from Annapolis, Md., led the Terps with a school-record 44 assists last season and added 39 goals to finish second on the team with 83 points. Stanicic also registered 52 steals and 19 kickouts to help lead the Terps to a 22-16 record, the most wins in school history.

Stanicic's 44 assists last season surpassed her combined totals from 2006 and 2007 combined, and her 83 points exceeded her 2007 total by 24. The 52 steals were also a career high. She is second all-time in career points and sits atop the list in career assists with 81.

Stanicic, who is currently working out with the Croatian National Team, recorded four or more points eight times last season, including a five-point performance against Indiana.

Junior utility Elizabeth Hopkins also received votes in balloting by the ACWPC.
