COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A pair of incoming University of Maryland water polo recruits claimed a stranglehold on prep postseason awards in South Florida to culminate their high school careers.
Elina Goldenberg of Sunrise, Fla., was named Girls Water Polo Player of the Year by the South Florida Sun Sentinel, and Shelby Reyes of Miami, Fla., earned similar honors from the Miami Herald. Both will play for the Terrapins in the fall.
A four-time Player of the Year in Broward County, Goldenberg helped St. Thomas Aquinas High School go 17-6 during a rebuilding season in 2007-08. She paced her team's attack, registering 69 goals out of 126 attempts and 67 assists. The four-time team captain also had 83 steals and eight field blocks during her final prep season.
Reyes served as goalie for a Gulliver Prep School squad that claimed its eighth consecutive Florida State championship in April. She finished her prep career undefeated, helping her team extend its unbeaten streak to 222 contests. She joins the Terps as the career record-holder for saves in the Florida State tournament.
Goldenberg (Navy Aquatic Club and South Florida Water Polo Club) and Reyes (Florida Coast Water Polo Club) will continue to compete for their respective club teams this summer prior to arriving in College Park.
