COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Deborah A. Yow, the director of athletics at the University of Maryland, has been selected as the next president of the Division 1A Athletic Directors' Association, executive director Dutch Baughman announced recently.
She will assume her presidential role at the D-1A meetings in September.
"Throughout her entire career, Debbie has distinguished herself as an extremely capable and effective leader," said Baughman. "She has managed a major athletics department in all areas of responsibility to a level that is admired and modeled by her colleagues across the country.
"She has been the primary faculty member in the Division 1-A Institute, as she has not only influenced the lives of over 450 athletics administrators over the past seven years, but she has been evaluated by those Institute participants as the best. We are blessed to realize her leadership and guidance for the entire profession of intercollegiate directors of athletics."
Yow, who will begin her 15th year in charge of the intercollegiate athletics program at Maryland, will serve as president of the organization, which includes athletics directors at all institutions designated as Division I-A by the NCAA, including the ACC, Big Ten, SEC, Pac-10, Big East and Big 12 conferences.
Yow will join a distinguished list of former presidents that includes Gene Smith of Ohio State, Kevin White, formerly of Notre Dame, Cedric Dempsey, formerly of Arizona, and Texas' DeLoss Dodds.
The Division 1A Athletic Directors' Association has offices in Grapevine, Texas. The organization is the voice of Division I-A athletics directors across the country, working closely with the NCAA on topics of mutual interest, and with faculty athletics representatives, among other initiatives.
The term of the appointment is one year. Yow is the first woman ever selected to serve in this national leadership role.
