Steffy Nominated for Allstate AFCA Good Works Team

Aug. 10, 2008

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland senior quarterback Jordan Steffy has been nominated for the 17th annual Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association recently announced.

Steffy, a fifth-year player from Leola, Pa., joins 70 fellow nominees who were selected from the more than 50,000 football student-athletes at all four-year collegiate institutions based on their exemplary involvement with charitable organizations and community service projects.

For the Terps signal-caller, those off-the-field efforts focus on aiding underprivileged and disabled youth, especially those suffering from epilepsy. Steffy's Children Deserve a Chance Foundation raised $15,000 in 2007 to aid young people in need, and the veteran quarterback has ambitions to expand his foundation in order to contribute even more.

The foundation currently is in the process of constructing a developmental youth center near Steffy's hometown that will provide area children with educational opportunities, as well as supervision following school days and during summer vacation.

"This developmental center is going to be a place for kids to go to learn and have fun while in a structured environment," Steffy said. "We want to take some of the maturity these kids are forced to develop because of family situations and channel it in a positive direction."

A selection committee consisting of five former members of the Good Works Team, two coaches, five members of the college football media and one Allstate representative will determine an 11-player 2008 Good Works Teams from the 45 nominees representing teams from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (I-A).

Steffy is one of six Atlantic Cost Conference football players and five Division I-A quarterbacks comprising the 2008 Good Works Team nominees. He enters his final season having completed 82 of 141 passes for 818 yards and two touchdowns during his Terrapins career.

The Terps quarterback and his teammates open the season by playing host to Delaware Aug. 30 at Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium.
