  • COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland volleyball team travels to New Orleans this weekend to participate in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on the campus of Tulane University.

The Terrapins will try to get back in the win column following last weekend's Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Maryland Volleyball Invitational that saw the Terps drop three matches to Missouri, St. John's and Kentucky to fall to 1-5 on the young season.

The Terps will begin play at 5 p.m. Friday against the North Dakota State Bison (4-2). Saturday action pits Maryland against Jacksonville State (3-4) at 3 p.m. and the host Green Wave of Tulane (2-4) at 9 p.m.

Maryland has never played any of this weekend's opponents before. Head coach Tim Horsmon is 1-0 all-time against Tulane, but has never faced North Dakota State or Jacksonville State.

North Dakota State won its home invitational last weekend and is hitting .221 as a team. Freshman setter Jennifer Lopez is the Bison's primary offensive weapon, leading the team with 81 kills on .391 hitting with 90 assists.

The Jacksonville State Gamecocks come into the weekend under .500 for the season, but two of their three wins have come at the hands of SEC opponents Auburn and Mississippi.

The Green Wave should prove to be a difficult host as they return all 13 letterwinners from last season's Conference USA regular season championship team. The Wave boast a trio of AVCA honorable mention all-Americans in Sara Radosevic, Bridget Wells and Jenn Miller, as well as C-USA Coach of the Year Liz Kritza.

The Wave have played a difficult schedule early in the season as their four losses have come to Missouri, BYU, Cal Poly and Nebraska.

Tulane went 28-6 a season ago and was the top RPI team not to be selected to the NCAA Tournament. The Wave are a unanimous pick to win Conference USA again this season.

The Terps are led offensively by sophomore outside hitter Michelle Kenning with 49 kills.

    Notes:

  • Senior right side Mary Beth Brown is six blocks shy of moving into fourth place in school history with Sherry Smith.
  • Junior middle blocker Katie Usher is seven block assists from moving into fourth in school history.
  • Senior outside hitter Maggie Schmelzle is 46 digs away from moving into third place in program history. Schmelzle's 1,339 career digs trails legendary Terp Eden Kroeger for the third spot.
