On September 7, forty-five members of the University of Maryland's Swimming team gathered at the Arlington Cemetery and proceeded to the Pentagon in Washington D.C.'s Freedom Walk. The team united as an expression of support for the victims of the September 11 attacks, and the many American men and women in uniform, past and present, who protect our freedom.
The swimming team was just a handful of the thousands staged at the Arlington Cemetery that day; however, the Terps' faces stood out in the crowd. As student-athlete Nina Rossi retold: "When we were there a woman came up to us and asked if we were from UMD and she then thanked us for being there."
The experience was rewarding for the swimmers as Terps and as members of the larger community. This sentiment was expressed by student-athlete Chris Chambers: "It was an opportunity for the team to bond and represent the University and the United States."
