Terrapins Drop Road Tilt at NC State

Sept. 28, 2008

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. - Freshman outside hitter Maddi Lee had a breakout game, recording 12 kills and five blocks, but the University of Maryland volleyball team dropped a four-set decision at NC State Sunday afternoon, 17-25, 18-25, 28-26 and 24-26.

The loss was Maryland's first in 12 attempts against NC State and dropped the Terps' overall record to 5-10 and 1-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Wolfpack improved to 8-9 overall and 2-0 in the ACC.

The Terrapins fell behind early in the first set and could not recover. Up 4-2 early, the Wolfpack went on a 7-2 run for an 11-4 lead. Maryland drew no closer than five the rest of the way as NC State took the eight-point victory.

Maryland started the second set slowly, as well, as the first four points went to the Wolfpack. NC State never trailed in the set, leading by as many as eight and eventually winning by seven.

After falling behind early in the first two sets, the Terrapins were the team to take command in the third set, scoring seven of the first 10 points. Up 8-4, however, the Terrapins lost the next four points to tie the set at 8-8 and the set went back and forth from there.

The Wolfpack led by four at one point, 17-13, and seemed poise for a sweep. The Terps rallied to get within one a couple times and eventually tied the score at 20 apiece on a service ace from senior setter Tedi Doucet.

NC State held two set points at 24-22, but again the Terps rallied. A Doucet kill and Wolfpack attack error extended the set. The Wolfpack served two more set points at 25-24 and 26-25, respectively. However, a kill by senior Maggie Schmelzle and back-to-back attack errors by NC State gave the set to the Terps, 28-26, and sent the match to a fourth set.

Buoyed by the third-set comeback, the Terps started strong in the fourth set. Maryland grabbed a 9-4 lead. Unfortunately for the Terps, the Wolfpack ripped off five consecutive points to erase the early deficit.

With the score tied at 12, NC State scored three straight points to force a Maryland timeout. The Terps clawed their way back into the set after the timeout, tying the score at 18 thanks to a 6-3 run. Maryland held five one-point leads from that point, including set point at 24-23, but could not seal the deal.

A Brittney Grove attack error tied the set at 24 apiece and then the Wolfpack sclaimed the set and match with a block assist and kill by Margaret Salata.

NC State out-hit Maryland .228 to .129.

NC State's Arlee Tamietti led all players with 19 kills while Aiwane Iboaya added 13.

Lee and junior Katie Usher paced the Terps with 12 kills each. Freshman Sharon Strizak had a team-high 25 assists for Maryland and added 11 digs.

Maryland is back in action at 7 p.m. Friday when Virginia Tech comes to Comcast Pavilion. The Terps will play the Virginia Cavaliers at 7 p.m. Saturday.
