COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Senior Maggie Schmelzle posted a match-high 15 digs to move into fourth place in school history in a 3-0 loss to Kentucky Saturday evening in the final match of the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Maryland Volleyball Invitational.
Kentucky (5-2) swept Maryland (1-5) by scores of 25-13, 25-21 and 25-11 to win the tournament championship. St. John's was the runner-up while Missouri finished third.
Schmelzle passed Carey Brennan on the all-time digs list and now sits fourth with 1,339 career digs.
The Terps scored the first point of the first set, but things went downhill quickly as they couldn't side out against the serve of Sarah Mendoza, who sparked the Wildcats to a 10-0 run to take command early. The Wildcats eventually took the set, 25-13.
After a back-and-forth beginning, Kentucky again pulled away to grab a commanding lead in the second set. The Wildcats lead 18-9 and appeared on their way to big win. However, the Terps rallied.
Maryland embarked on a 9-1 run to knot the score at 19 apiece. Unfortunately, Kentucky posted the next three points to re-gain control and eventually take the set, 25-21.
The third set was tied at 6-6 after 12 points, but Kentucky had another big run to grab a 14-7 lead. Maryland got within five points at 15-10, but could inch no closer, losing 25-11.
Freshman Lisa Scott and sophomore Brittney Grove had five kills each to lead the Terps.
Mendoza led the Wildcats with 17 kills.
The Terps travel to New Orleans next week to participate in the Allstate Sugar Bowl at Tulane University. North Dakota State and Jacksonville State are also participating in the event.
Kentucky's Queen Nzenwa was named the tournament's most valuable player. Schmelze was the only Terp representative on the all-tournament team.
