BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - The University of Maryland water polo team was ranked fourth in the 2009 Women's CWPA Preseason Poll, which was released Wednesday.
The projected fourth-place finish matches last year's selection, which was the team's highest preseason ranking in its six-year existence.
The Terrapins are coming off their best season in school history, posting a 22-16 record and a fourth-place finish at the 2008 CWPA Eastern Championships. The win total was the highest in school history.
This season, the Terps are hoping to improve upon last year's impressive finish with 14 returning players, including nine seniors, all seven starters, and the top six all-time scorers.
In addition to its preseason selection in the league poll, Maryland received a pair of votes in the National Collegiate Women's Top 20 Preseason Poll. That poll was also released Wednesday.
Maryland opens the 2009 season on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Triton Invitational in San Diego.
The tournament should be a good measuring stick as it features some of the top teams in the country with 12 of the 16 participants ranked in the preseason top 20.
Maryland opens the tournament against No. 6 San Diego State, the highest-ranked team in the field.
