GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland's Torrey Smith was voted the Atlantic Coast Conference Specialist of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Smith continues his assault on the ACC record book. The sophomore entered Saturday tied for 16th all-time in league history with 1,732 career kickoff return yards. Smith's first return vs. Wake Forest went for 85 yards (second-longest of his career), and he totaled a career-high 194 yards on six returns (32.3 ypr). He set the ACC single-season kickoff return yards mark (1,089) last year.
He now has 1,926 career kickoff return yards, which is good for eighth in ACC history. He nearly set the Maryland record for career kickoff returns for touchdowns on the 85-yard return, but was tripped up at the Wake Forest 15-yard line. Smith and four others have two career kickoff returns for scores.
Smith also hauled in a career-high 10 passes and posted 267 all-purpose yards, the second-highest total of his career. He ranks first in the nation in that category (236.7 ypg).
It marks Smith's first weekly honor from the league and third for the Terrapins this season. Nick Ferrara (co-specialist) and Demetrius Hartsfield (top freshman) were honored last week.
