COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins went through a 90-minute workout on Thursday in preparation for their Homecoming matchup with Virginia, which is set for 4 p.m. Saturday at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.

Practicing in rainy, cold conditions the last two days, the Terps looked to continue building on a solid offensive effort put forth last week against Wake Forest.

Chris Turner threw for 307 yards against the Demon Deacons, the fourth 300-yard game of his career, and matched his career-high with three touchdown passes. Wide receiver Torrey Smith set a career-high with 10 receptions, including one touchdown. With career-best 194 kickoff return yards, Smith moved to eighth place all-time in ACC history with 1,926 career yards, and was named ACC Specialist of the Week for his effort.

"We had a good practice. Offensively we had a very good practice. We seemed much improved today," Friedgen said after Wednesday's workout.

At 1-1 in ACC play, the Terps know the next few weeks will be vital to the overall success of the season.

"I've been stressing it all week. We talked about it in today's team meeting. This is a pretty important stretch," Friedgen said Thursday.

After committing just a single turnover against Wake Forest, Maryland has continued to stress ball security in what could be trying weather conditions.

"We hope it's not a factor," Friedgen said of the weather. "We probably played two of our better games last season (vs. NC State and North Carolina) in bad weather. "We didn't have any turnovers today and the weather was pretty bad. I think it has more to do with mind set than anything."

Virginia, 2-3 overall including 1-0 in conference play, enters Saturday's tilt on a two-game winning streak, with victories over North Carolina and Big Ten foe Indiana. The Cavaliers racked up 536 yards of total offense including 308 yards passing by quarterback Jameel Sewell, against the Hoosiers.

Running back Mikell Simpson rushed for a career-high four TDs against Indiana, and has racked up 183 yards rushing and 145 yards receiving in the past two games.

The Terps also possess a number of dangerous offensive threats. Wide receiver Adrian Cannon is coming off the first multiple-TD game of his career, having caught two touchdown passes against the Demon Deacons. Cannon ranks second on the team with 23 receptions for 221 yards this season. WR Ronnie Tyler is tied for second on the team with 221 receiving yards, and the Terps have five players with at least 10 receptions on the year.

Following Thursday's practice, Friedgen announced that Smith will serve as special-teams captain against Virginia. He is currently first in the nation in all-purpose yards (236.7 yards per game).

Friedgen also named defensive end De'Onte Arnett defensive scout team player of the week, and tight end Ryan Schlothauer offensive scout team player of the week. It was the second week in a row Friedgen named the pair as scout team players of the week.

Defensive back Jamari McCollough, a product of Randallstown HS in Baltimore, will carry the Maryland state flag onto the field. Kerry Boykins, a native of Chesapeake, Va., will bring the American flag.

Saturday's game against broadcast live on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network (pregame begins at 2:30 p.m.) and telecast on ESPNU. Comcast SportsNet will show a replay of telecast in the Washington D.C./Baltimore market at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
