COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland leads Virginia 6-3 at the half, with a steady rain and sloppy field conditions contributing to a defensive-dominated half.
The Terps tied a season-high with four sacks, and held the Cavaliers to 105 yards of total offense. Alex Wujciak led Maryland with eight tackles, including 1.5 tackles-for-loss.
Virginia opened the scoring with a field goal after an impressive defensive stand by Maryland. The Cavaliers had a first-and-goal from inside the Terps one yardline, but Alex Wujciak and Demetrius Hartsfield stopped quarterback Jameel Sewell on a sneak for no gain. A false start backed up Virginia to the five, and on second-and-goal Wujciak and Jared Harrell combined to sack Sewell for a loss of eight. Travis Ivey and Isaiah Ross stopped Sewell behind the line again on third down, setting up a Robert Randolph 32-yard field goal for a 3-0 Virginia lead.
A Virginia turnover setup Maryland's game-tying field goal with 13:14 to play in the half. Adrian Moten broke through the Virginia offensive line to sack Sewell, forcing a fumble in the process. Ivey recovered it, marking his second fumble recovery this season. Maryland's drive stalled after three plays, setting up a 48-yard field goal attempt by Nick Ferrara. The true freshman nailed it, tying the score at 3-3. The 48-yarder marked the second-longest field goal of the season for Ferrara, with his longest being a 50-yarder last week against Wake Forest.
The Terps went ahead on an eight-play, 27-yard drive capped off by a 30-yard field goal from Ferrara.
